Reading Groups

The department generally has several reading groups active during the academic year with both faculty and graduate student attendees. Current groups include:

Logic and Philosophy of Science Reading Group
Coordinator: Thomas Barrett
Currently on hiatus

Ancient Philosophy Reading Group
Coordinator: Salvador Escalante
This is an interdisciplinary reading group for students in History, Classics, Politics and Philosophy. We are reading a section of Plato's Philebus (31b-42c), his most important work on pleasure. This is a translation and commentary reading group, so it requires some knowledge of Greek. (If you're just getting started or your Greek is a bit rusty, fear not! We will go slowly.)

We will be meeting on Fridays from 11.00 to 12.20 am at SH 5617 (PHIL Conference Room). All are welcome.

(The library has Jon Burnet's edition of the Philebus, which we are using. You can also find the Loeb edition, with facing English translation, at loebclassics.org).

For questions, reach out to Salvador Escalante salvad@ucsb.edu
